The owners of a New Orleans nursing home have been charged with manslaughter over 34 deaths during Katrina. The patients were found drowned in their beds at St Rita's nursing home in St Bernard parish following the storm. The owners Mable and Salvador Mangano twice declined the offer of transport to evacuate the residents. The married couple have been charged with 34 counts of negligent homicide. 44 bodies were also discovered at the Memorial Medical Centre, after their doctor neglected to evacuate them, in order to save his girlfriend who survived.
Hmm, well, what would you do if you were the doctor and had the choice between evacuating 44 people in your charge and let your girl friend die or save your girl friend?
It's not an easy one, my moral obligations would say save the patients but I am not sure if I could leave a girl I was in love with to die for anything and she'd be my first priority, sure professional and personal should never mix but sometimes it's inevitable. Either way that must've been a horrific choice to deal with. And ultimately the blame lies not with those individuals (even if some blame does) but with the government who niglected to prepare for the situation.
cheers

yeah, B I agree with you. It's easy for us that aren't in the situation to say what we would do and point the fingers saying they were wrong for the decision they made. You don't know what was going through there minds when it all happened! I'm sure they felst some regret! Before I lost my site, I was a nurses assistant, we were always told if anything happened such this or a fire we were to go in and get the residents. i have always said if it came down to it I don't know if i could bring myself to go into a burning building. As much as I cared for these residents and thaught of some of them as family, I can't say I know how i would feel when it came down to it. sometimes fear gets the best of you! No matter how nice or evil you are! smile- angel
